Pablo PICASSO (1881–1973) - Lot 27
Pablo PICASSO (1881–1973) Young Woman. February 17, 1949. Zincography on thin vellum mounted on Arches vellum (watermark in the margin). One of the few test prints predating the 1952 edition commemorating the centennial of the Atelier Mourlot, made before the red photogravure text “For the Mourlot-Picasso Centennial” was printed. Rare. The sheet is oxidized and slightly yellowed on both the front and back, with yellowing along the edges and a few handling creases. Front: very slight white discoloration on the forehead; a small mark on the left edge on both the front and back (possibly from old paper reinforcement?); a very small, filled-in loss in a black area; very slight imperfections and white spots on the surface. On the reverse: oxidation, scattered brown spots, two traces of former mounting, slight black spots, a small vertical indentation at the bottom of the subject. (Mourlot 153, Bloch 1836) 39.5 x 29.8 cm. Sheet dimensions: 65.5 x 50 cm. Provenance: Ader-Nordmann auction of December 12, 2014, lot 582 This portrait of a young woman is part of a series of bust portraits of women from the late 1940s, which would culminate in the creation of the masterful work “Woman in an Armchair,” including this portrait of a young woman (Mourlot 154). Picasso also created two paintings on canvas of similar subjects in 1949.
