Italian school of the 17th century Christ with column Statue in red alabaster H. 64 cm Accents and restorations This sculpture, carved from a large block of red alabaster, depicts Christ, arms linked on the column, one hand on his heart, head bent forward in an attitude of gentle resignation just before his scourging. This iconography of the suffering Christ was particularly widespread after the Counter-Reformation, especially in Italy. Note the unusual positioning of the crossed legs, skilfully separated by the drapery girding the left hip and folding over the column.
