René SEYSSAUD (1867–1952) - Lot 48
René SEYSSAUD (1867–1952) Boats on the Beach at Dusk Oil on canvas Signed lower right 53.5 x 80.5 cm Provenance: - Private collection, Toulon - Work likely acquired from the wife of Eugenes Printz A pioneer of Fauvism and a leading figure in Provençal painting, René Seyssaud is famous for revolutionizing the depiction of landscapes in the South of France. Having lived successively in the Vaucluse and the Bouches-du-Rhône, his work is now held in numerous national museums and is highly sought after by collectors of Southern French art. Seyssaud stands out for a technique unique to his time, characterized by the use of a dense medium, worked into impasto and often applied directly with a palette knife. Eschewing academic detail, he captures the light of the South through pure, saturated, and contrasting colors. His compositions—whether landscapes of Mont Ventoux, rural scenes, or seascapes—are defined by their power and modern use of color.
