CHINA, Possibly Shang period, Anyang region
Large "He" type ritual alcohol jug in brown patina bronze, standing on a short circular foot. The wide, swollen body is topped by a lid in the shape of a zoomorphic mask. The surface is decorated in light relief with geometric registers, punctuated by taotie masks on a leiwen background, arranged on the sides and flanked by stylized cicada-shaped grips, with kui dragons moving in relief. The straight spout is decorated with stylized banana leaves. The lid features anthropo-zoomorphic features in high relief: an oval-shaped face, a blunt nose, a mouth with thick, protruding lips, bulging eyes with prominent pupils, surmounted by small, arched, full eyebrows, and two stylized horns; the two straight side grips depicting ears complete the ensemble. Inscribed on the inside of the body.
