Fan ZENG (1938) Happy to accept fate, why still doubt? Watercolor and ink on paper Signed 33 x 33 cm (slight foxing and small fold) Title : 乐夫天命复奚疑 乐（lè）: to rejoice, to be happy 夫（fū）: old particle, often emphatic or rhetorical 天命（tiānmìng）: heavenly mandate, destiny (often in the sense of. "what Heaven has decided") 复（fù）: again, again 奚疑（xī yí）: why doubt? It's an expression that comes from the prologue of the prose play "归去 来兮辞" (Homecoming) by 陶渊明 (Tao Yuanming), a famous Chinese poet of the poet of the 15th century, and conveys a profound wisdom: a peaceful acceptance of destiny, without anguish or second-guessing.
