Matthias STOM (Amersfoort 1600 - ?1650) - Lot 22
Matthias STOM (Amersfoort 1600 - ?1650) Saint Anthony Canvas 73 x 68,5 cm Without frame Provenance : Spanish collection, Oviedo region, since the 19th century ; Private collection, France, since 1935. Originally from Utrecht like Hendrick ter Brugghen and Gerrit van Honthorst, Matthias Stom differs from his two contemporaries in that he never returned from Italy. His career is not well known: he was in Rome from 1630 to 1632, in Naples from 1633 to 1640 and in Palermo in 1641. It is probably in this last city that he spent the end of his career. Marked by Caravaggio of Rome but also of Naples, and especially marked by Ribera in his Neapolitan period, Matthias Stom differs from his colleagues of the North in that he paints mostly biblical scenes. He brings to his characters a new depth by a precise treatment of the faces, chiseling the wrinkles and the flesh in order to reveal their psychology. Saint Anthony, recognizable by his bell and his blue cross, offers us to see an old man in serious meditation, whose deep wrinkles on his forehead testify to his wisdom. The painter gives life to his model with flaming touches, catching the light on the hair, the beard and the hands. The warm, dark color palette accentuates the dramatic intensity. Another version of the painting is known, which was recently sold in Italy (see sale December 13, 2022, Brescia, Casa d'Aste Capitolium). Some compositional changes are to be noted: the face is more turned to the left face is more turned to the left, the hands are off center to the right and do not hold the bell the bell, the cross is transferred to his right shoulder.
