Workshop of Jean-Baptiste GREUZE (1725-1805) - Lot 1
Workshop of Jean-Baptiste GREUZE (1725-1805) Study of an old man's head for the Paralytic or "Filial Piety". Sanguine on cream paper, pasted on a strong paper 452 x 374 mm Our old man's head is the one that appears in the famous painting "La Piété Filiale", a success of the Salon of 1763, acquired in 1766 by Empress Catherine II of Russia on the advice of Diderot and now in Saint Petersburg (Hermitage Museum, inv. 1168). "The dominant figure in the painting is a venerable 80 year old paralytic; an elder son who serves him administers the food he cannot take by himself, suspends this respectable office to listen to the expressions of gratitude of the old man who seems to predict to this tender son that he will find one day, in his children, the reward of the pious service he renders him." Mercure de France, November 1763 The prototype drawing of ours is currently preserved in Middlebury, Vermont (Middlebury College Museum of Art, inv 1980.004, 45 x 37 cm.), which was used to produce a proof (Briscadieu sale, Bordeaux, 27/03/2021, lot 132, 41 x 31 cm.). Another study of the same old man is known, in wash, more finished, preserved in St. Petersburg (Hermitage Museum, inv ОР-14727, 49.3 x 40 cm).
