Wooden medallion carved in very high relief representing the Virgin Mary offering a scapular to Saint Simon Stock. Northern Italy or southern France, 17th century. H : 59,5 cm (stripped, small accidents). This bas-relief was to be hung in the chapel of the Confraternity of the Holy Scapulars of a parish church, a confraternity very present in the south of France, notably in Marseille, Aix and Toulon, and attached to the Carmelite order. These brotherhoods of penitents were open to the laity who wore this small square of cloth under their clothing.
