During the Emigration, he took refuge in London from 1792 to 1796 where he wrote a document recounting the flight from Varennes (20 and 21 June 1791) according to the Queen's confidences. A student of Jan II Restout and Louis Jean François Lagrenée, Bernard d'Agesci studied at the Royal Academy where he developed close ties with Jacques Louis David. He then went to study at the Villa Medici (1783) as a boarder of the King. There, he placed himself under the protection of Joseph Marie Vien. On his return to France, he worked a lot for the city of Niort, which now houses a museum dedicated to him.
