This drawing is to be compared with a study of Venus with a Dove, recently presented on the art market (Paris, Drouot, De Baecque, 20 November 2015, lot 14), of identical format, of which it seems to be a version conscientiously done in reverse. Small details differ, however: some drapery, some crosshatching (which nevertheless runs from right to left); it cannot therefore be a counter-proof. Could this be a test run for another drawing, now in the Horvitz collection (Boston), of a Venus (without a dove), a pivotal stage in the conception of the famous Brown Odalisque of 1742 (Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. RF2140)?
