Tran Phuc Duyen, born in Hanoi in 1923, entered the École des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine in 1942, where he chose to devote himself to lacquer. After completing his training, he exhibited his work very early on, notably in his studio at 146 avenue du Grand Buddha (now Quan Thanh), where he attracted a wealthy clientele and quickly made a name for himself in Vietnam's French community. In 1950, three of his works were selected as a gift for Pope Pius XII.
In 1954, the artist moved to France. In Paris, he became close to the painter and decorator Jean Souverbie, whose studio he regularly visited at the École des Beaux-Arts. Through experimentation with different materials, he succeeded in recreating supports and pigments close to those used in Vietnam, enabling him to pursue his lacquer art. Between 1961 and 1968, he presented his work at several exhibitions in France (Nice, Paris), Switzerland, Spain and Canada.
His inspiration remains deeply linked to his native country, of which he depicts many scenes. However, his artistic language evolves over time, gradually moving towards a more abstract expression. The plate presented here belongs to his Vietnamese production period (1945-1954). It bears his signature on the right-hand side of the scene and, with its naturalistic depiction of deer, illustrates the characteristic style he adopted at the time.
