After his initial training in the Netherlands, Gerrit van Honthorst traveled to Italy around 1610-1620, where he discovered the work of Caravaggio and his Roman disciples. Fascinated by their use of chiaroscuro, he adopted this technique and became one of the leading representatives of the Caravaggesque school in the Netherlands, alongside Hendrick ter Brugghen and Dirck van Baburen.
He repeatedly treated the theme of Christ crowned with thorns. The position of the head and the expression on the face of our painting can be compared with the Christ crowned with thorns in the Rijksmuseum, dated circa 1622 (see J. R. Judson, R. E. O. Ekkart, Gerrit van Honthorst, Ghent, 1999, no. 60, reproduced on pl. 25). We can also compare it with David Playing the Harp, dated 1622 and now in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht (see opus quoted above, no. 11, reproduced on pl. 5), where the framing, the expression of the head raised upwards and the treatment of light are similar. Our painting must therefore be dated circa 1620, most probably at the end of his stay in Rome or just after his return to Utrecht.
