[RIMBAUD Jean- Nicolas-Arthur] 1854-1891 - Lot 253
[RIMBAUD Jean- Nicolas-Arthur] 1854-1891 Arthur Rimbaud's service records from May to September 1876 concerning his enlistment in the Dutch colonial army in 1876. Copy in conformity with the n°1428 of the register of the Dutch War Department. Extract established at the beginning of the XXth century. Printed document with handwritten notes in ink, 1p. oblong in-folio (22 x 34 cm). We find in this extract various information about him: parents' names, date and place of birth, last residence, height... Rimbaud, then 22 years old, enlists for six years as a soldier of the Dutch colonial army to repress a revolt in Sumatra Island. Incorporated on May 19, 1876 at the Rotterdam colonial enlistment depot, he embarked on June 10, 1876 on board the steamer "Prins von Oranje" with a 300 guilders bonus. He disembarked in Batavia on July 23, 1876 to be incorporated into the 1st Depot Battalion. If we refer to the indications on his brief military career in Indonesia given in this document, Rimbaud is reported as missing on August 15, 1876, he is struck off the register of the War Department on September 12, 1876. A translation in French of the document is joined from the same period, 1 folio page in black ink.
