Carved limestone head of a man. Hair elaborated... - Lot 217 - Maison R&C, Commissaires-Priseurs Associés
Carved limestone head of a man. Hair elaborated into a hairstyle with a parting on the right side, the locks are curled and end in a snail-shaped curl; eyes with hemmed eyelids, slightly stretched and forming crow's feet at the ends; half-open mouth, moustache and beard with fine curled strands like the hair Workshop of Pierre Puget (Marseille 1620 - 1694) Height : 28 cm (missing nose, beard) base Pierre Puget made many sculptures in Calisanne stone for fountains but also for the atlantes of the Toulon Town Hall. He maintained a large workshop and trained students who, after assisting him, would themselves become renowned sculptors. Let us quote in particular Honoré Pellé (Gap 1641 - Génes 1718) but also Christophe Veyrier (Trets 1637 - Toulon 1689) who worked in Toulon and used the same limestone as Puget. The psychological realism of this head, but especially the curly locks so characteristic of Pierre Puget, allow a comparison with the bust of the Salvator Mundi kept in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille (inv 68).
